Lingerie Fit Guide: How to Find Pieces That Actually Fit and Flatter

Lingerie that fits well looks better, feels better, and lasts longer. Yet sizing in lingerie is notoriously inconsistent across brands. This guide gives you the practical knowledge to shop smarter — whether you're buying for yourself or as a gift.

1. Know Your Measurements

Standard clothing sizes don't translate reliably to lingerie. Take these three measurements with a soft tape measure:

  • Band size (underbust): Measure directly under your bust, keeping the tape snug and level. Round to the nearest even number.
  • Bust size (fullest point): Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.
  • Cup size: Subtract your band measurement from your bust measurement. Each inch = one cup size (1" = A, 2" = B, 3" = C, etc.).
  • Waist & hip: For bottoms, bodysuits, and teddies, measure the narrowest part of your waist and the widest part of your hips.

Always check the specific brand's size chart — a 34B in one brand may fit like a 34C in another.

2. Bra & Bralette Fit

A well-fitting bra does most of its work through the band, not the straps. Signs of a good fit:

  • The band sits level all the way around — not riding up in the back
  • The center gore (the piece between the cups) lies flat against your sternum
  • Cups contain the breast fully without spillage or gaping
  • Straps don't dig in or fall off the shoulder

If the band rides up, go down a band size and up a cup size (sister sizing). If cups gap, go down a cup size.

3. Panties & Bottoms

Lingerie bottoms are typically sized XS–XL or by waist/hip measurement. Key fit notes:

  • Thongs & G-strings: Size to your hip measurement; they should sit comfortably without digging
  • High-waist styles: Size to your waist; these are meant to sit at or above the natural waist
  • Boyshorts & briefs: Size to the larger of your waist or hip measurement

4. Teddies, Bodysuits & Chemises

One-piece styles require the most attention to proportions. Look for:

  • Adjustable straps to accommodate torso length
  • Stretch fabric (spandex/elastane content) for a more forgiving fit
  • Snap closures at the crotch for practicality

If you're between sizes, size up for comfort — these styles are less forgiving than separates.

5. Fabric & Care

  • Lace: Delicate and beautiful; hand wash or use a mesh laundry bag on a gentle cycle. Lay flat to dry.
  • Satin & silk: Smooth and luxurious; hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent. Never wring.
  • Mesh & sheer: Durable but snag-prone; hand wash and air dry.
  • Stretch fabrics (spandex blends): Most forgiving and easiest to care for; machine wash cold, air dry.

6. Buying as a Gift

If you don't know the recipient's measurements, a gift card is genuinely the most thoughtful option — it lets them choose their own fit and style. If you want to buy a specific piece, err on the side of sizing up; it's easier to exchange for a smaller size than to return something too small.
